2 hidden in his suitcase是過去分詞短語作定語，修飾watches，它相當(dāng)于一個定語從句：which were hidden in his suitcase.
3 looking me in the eye，直盯著我的眼睛，這是分詞短語作狀語，表示方式，修飾 asked。
4 The officer went through，這里go through作“檢查”講。
5 in a dreadful mess (或 in a mess)，亂七八糟，混亂透了。

2 quite the opposite，完全相反，截然不同。

……還真希望在那里多呆些日子。wish引起的賓語從句常用虛擬語氣。

5 just as…, 正當(dāng)……的時候。
6 She had told him to come straight in if ever she failed to open the door and to leave the bread on the kitchen table. 她曾告訴過他，如果她沒去開門，他可直接進(jìn)來，把面包放在廚房的桌子上。if ever在條件句中表示強(qiáng)調(diào)，可譯作“任何時候”。to come straight in指“直接進(jìn)來”。
7 Not wanting to frighten the poor man, 不想去嚇唬這個可憐的人。這是現(xiàn)在分詞短語的否定形式，作目的狀語。

2 out of business, 倒閉，破產(chǎn)。

6 be at war with…, 與……處于戰(zhàn)爭狀態(tài)。

1 with some children, 介詞with此處作“對于”講。
2 go a long way, 可以維持很久。
3 If fifty pence pieces are not exchanged for sweets, 如果50便士的分幣沒有用來換糖果的話。exchange…for…作“以……換……”講，注意英語中的便士有兩種復(fù)數(shù)形式pence和pennies, 但用法不同。如：a fifty pence是指1個50便士的硬幣，而fifty pennies是指50個1便士的硬幣。
4 have found their way there, 其中there是指儲蓄罐。find one's way在這里作“進(jìn)入”講，即放到“儲蓄罐”里。
5 what is more, 更有甚者。是固定詞組，此處用作插入語。
