　　1 It has never been explained why...，在這個(gè)句子中真正的主語是以why引導(dǎo)的主語從句。

　　3 inviting ... fire,是動(dòng)名詞短語，此處作主語，put out作“撲滅”、“熄滅”講。

　　4 dress up as，裝扮成。

　　5 they were not to take him seriously,(他們)不要把他當(dāng)回事。

　　take此處作“對(duì)待”、“接受”講，多指對(duì)人、對(duì)事物的態(tài)度和反應(yīng)。

　　6 grateful to the student for this piece of advance information,對(duì)這個(gè)學(xué)生事先通報(bào)情況表示感謝。be grateful to sb. for sth.，對(duì)某人因某事表示感謝。

　　7 as he pleased，是方式狀語從句，后面省略了to do，可譯作“隨他的便”。

　　8 be under arrest,被逮捕，拘禁。

　　9 Only when…did he realize that...。在這句話中，only加上狀語從句放在句首，因此主句的主謂語要用倒裝的句式。
