No matter your background or your circumstance of birth, in America you can get a good education, you can start your own business, you can raise a family, you can worship freely, and help elect the leaders of your community and your country. You can support the policies of our government, or you're free to openly disagree with them.
A rich country like the United States has been a net importer of capital from middle-income countries like China has come to be seen as a prime example of global current account imbalances. Such uphill flows of capital—contrary to the prediction of standard economic models that capital should flow from richer to poorer countries—have led to calls for a restructuring of global finance and a reconsideration of the roles and relative importance of various reserve currencies.
I can’t imagine that any of these interactive digital experiences will become classics, but they are innovative and fun and offer a certain glimpse of the near future—when collisions between video games and books mature into something commonplace, not experimental. The potential of these multimedia collaborations is tremendous, and it allows for new and interesting ways to tell stories and help us find things we might want to read. As video-game reviews replace book reviews in newspapers, next year’s fair will surely see a greater blurring of the boundary between books and video games. And this is something to celebrate, not lament. Though there might not always be a market for paper books, there will always be a market for stories. I’m excited to play them.
