1. would rather表示一種心理愿望，意思為：寧愿。表示主語本人的愿望時，接動詞原形;表示對他人的愿望、想法時，現(xiàn)在和將來的情況用過去時表示;過去的情況用過去完成時表示。如：

　　I’d rather do it by myself. 我寧愿獨自一人去做那件事。

　　I’d rather you came tomorrow. 我倒想要你明天來。

　　I’d rather you had finished it yesterday. 我倒想你昨天就做完了

　　2. would rather的否定形式為在rather后加not，但變疑問句時，往往只將would提到句首。如：

　　I’d rather not tell you about it. 我倒想不告訴你為好。

　　Would you rather give the chance up? 你寧愿把機會放棄嗎?

　　3. would rather常與than連用，would rather…than…，意思是：寧愿…而不…。有時，也可寫成：than…，would rather…的形式，意義不變。如：

　　I’d rather die than give in. 我寧愿死，也不會屈服。

　　Than steal, I’d rather die of hunger, 我寧愿餓死，也不會去偷。

　　在這一結(jié)構(gòu)中，than后面與前面相同的部分場被省略，只保留不同的部分。如：

　　I’d rather watch TV than ( I )go to the cinema. 我寧愿看電視也不愿去看電影。(省略主語，保留謂語部分)

　　I’d rather play football than (I play) basketball. 我寧愿踢足球也不愿打籃球。(省略主語和謂語，保留賓語)

　　I would rather go by bike than (I go ) by bus. 我寧愿騎單車也不愿坐公共汽車。(省略主語和謂語，保留方式狀語)

　　I’d rather be healthy than (I’m) rich. 與其有錢，不如身體健康。(省略主語和系動詞，保留表語部分)

　　I would rather do it slowly than (I do it ) carelessly. 與其粗心，還不如慢一點。(省略主語和謂語，保留副詞狀語)
